Councillor Prentice is wrapped up in BCC first aid emergency courses

25 October, 2007

Today Councillor for Walter Taylor Ward, Jane Prentice participated in a bandaging demonstration at the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre in light of the First Aid Emergency course to be run next month as part of Brisbane City Council's Active and Healthy Lifestyle program for GOLD (Growing Older and Living Dangerously).

Margaret Smith, (who is a trained medical officer) performed the demonstration on Cr Prentice displaying different bandaging techniques to use on casualties whilst waiting for emergency services to arrive.

In association with the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre, Brisbane City Council is running this First Aid Emergency course for those over the age of 50 to give them vital skills and knowledge that can help in dire circumstances.

Cr Prentice said this is a great opportunity to obtain skills that could be the difference between minor injuries and complications that are more serious.

Earlier this year the Pfizer Australia Health Report was released in which St John Ambulance Australia CEO, Len Fiori said, "As with any serious accident, or when somebody suffers a heart attack for example, the first few minutes of help can mean the difference between life and death".

The course will run next month on Friday 16 November from 9:30am to 11:30am at the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre. Bookings opened on Friday 19 October.

Cr Prentice said, "The course is also excellent value at $6.60 considering you can pay hundreds for a standard first aid course and it is also being held in the comfort of the Sherwood Neighbourhood Centre's air-conditioned hall".
