Lord Mayor opens Brisbane's third aquifer underground bore water source

17 October, 2007

The Lord Mayor Campbell Newman opened Brisbane's third aquifer underground bore water source yesterday.

He conducted a behind-the-scenes tour of the treatment plant that turns the bore water into potable water that is injected into Brisbane's water supply.

The Lord Mayor's Spokesperson on Water, Cr Jane Prentice said the water was absolutely delicious.

"I am confident the local residents will be delighted with the quality and any change in the normal water taste".

The Algester Water Treatment Plant will treat four boreholes up to 106m deep and supply 2.1 million litres of groundwater per day to about 18,000 properties in parts of Acacia Ridge, Algester, Calamvale and Parkinson.

It is part of a $75 million project, which aims to provide about 20 million litres of groundwater a day to supplement dwindling dam supplies.

"While South East Queensland is currently suffering from the worst drought in over 100 years, these 1800 residents will in effect be drought protected", said Cr Prentice.

The water treating process sees raw water flow to an aeration tower; then a flow balance tank; then through a sedimentation removal and filtration process; it undergoes disinfection with chlorine and ammonia, which form a strong disinfectant; and then it is pumped into Paradise Road trunk main.
