Lord Mayor Campbell Newman is urging residents to use Council's storm checklist ahead of one of the stormiest season in recent history, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
The call comes as the Bureau of Meteorology predicted storms for tomorrow and released its summer cyclone season predictions.
The Lord Mayor said residents should prepare for a storm, by trimming overhanging branches and removing other items dangerous in winds.
Council's storm checklist can be found at www.brisbane.qld.gov.au and by searching on 'storm checklist'.
Cr Newman said the checklist contained simple but vital guidance on what to do in different stages of a storm - before, as it approaches and strikes, and its aftermath.
"During storm season, the weather can change quickly, so being prepared is our best defence," he said.
He advised residents to familiarise their family with the step-by-step guide.
"Good tips are to prepare a portable radio and torch with batteries, obtain a first aid kit, and prepare an emergency contacts list," he said.
Council has joined "Project One Voice", with 10 other Councils, Energex, the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and the department of Emergency Services.
As part of a new regional approach to dealing with summer, BOM will use council boundaries as the basis of their weather warnings through www.bom.gov.au.
Cr Newman said this year Council adopted a proactive approach to the storm season, by holding a free green waste collection ahead of the storms, receiving 6000 tonnes across Willawong, Nudgee, Chandler, and Ferny Grove.
Council’s free kerbside collection service operates citywide on an ongoing basis for green waste and large items.
