Brisbane may have just emerged from a chilly winter, but Lord Mayor Campbell Newman is already looking ahead towards the summer storm season.
Next weekend (September 13-14) and on the weekend of October 4-5, residents will have a chance to rid their yards of potential missiles generated during damaging winds.
Cr Newman Said Council would provide free green waste tipping on the two weekends in the lead-up to the storm season, to ensure yards were clear of potentially dangerous debris.
"On those weekends, people who take their waste to Brisbane City Council dumps will be able to do so free of charge," Cr Newman said.
"There's an old saying that the best time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining. That's certainly the case when preparing for storms.
"Nature can be unpredictable and even devastating at times, so it's vital that we're all ready for the potential onslaught before any damage is done."
Cr Newman said an emergency kit checklist would soon be available on the Brisbane City Council website, which would help residents identify essentials for their storm kits.
Brisbane City Council has joined Project One Voice alliance, along with 10 other south-east Queensland councils, Energex, the Bureau of Meteorology and the Department of Emergency Services.
As part of a new regional approach to dealing with the summer storm season, the Bureau of Meteorolgy will begin using new council boundaries as the basis of their weather warnings in south-east Queensland through www.bom.gov.au.
To keep updated this storm season, Brisbane residents are encouraged to visit either the Brisbane City Council or Energex websites for more information: www.brisbane.qld.gov.au or www.energex.com.au
