Expressions of interest called for new CityCat terminals

27 June, 2008

Brisbane City Council will advertise for Expressions of Interest for additional CityCat terminals this weekend, delivering on Lord Mayor Campbell Newman's election promise to expand the popular service.

Cr Newman said the terminals would be constructed in partnership with the private sector, an approach that has already proven successful in Brisbane.

"The regatta ferry terminal at Toowong is a great example of what can be done by the private sector and I want to build on that success," he said.

"There are plenty of locations along the Brisbane River that would welcome a CityCat terminal and I would imagine developers, Chambers of Commerce and businesses would be keen to step up to the plate."

Cr Newman said the new terminals would be located between St Lucia upstream and the Gateway Bridge downstream.

“There are several opportunities we’ve already identified, which will make our CityCat services even more accessible to commuters,” he said.

Potential new terminal sites areas already identified by Council officers include:
• West End – near the southern end of Davies Park;
• Milton – near Park Rd/ Coronation Drive intersection;
• Petrie Bight;
• Teneriffe – opposite the intersection of Beeston and Macquarie Sts;
• Newstead River Park;
• Northshore Hamilton; and
• Gateway Bridge – on the southern bank of the river, providing access to nearby eastern suburbs.

Cr Newman said submissions would be assessed based on the proposed location, design, accessibility, environmental impact and catchment area of the terminals.

The EOI process will promote design and development innovation from respondents, including green design credentials and links with local bikeway infrastructure.

A shortlist of options is expected to be presented to Civic Cabinet in September.
